PDF Metadata Editor
View and edit title, author, subject, keywords and creator, then save.
Your files never leave your device. Everything runs in your browser.
What PDF Metadata Editor does
PDF Metadata Editor shows the document information stored inside a PDF — title, author, subject, keywords and creator — and lets you change it before saving a copy.
Metadata travels with every PDF: the author field can reveal who wrote a document, the creator field names the software used, and a title left over from a template can look unprofessional in a work context. Reviewing these fields is a routine step before publishing or sending files outside your organisation.
The values are read and written locally with pdf-lib. Your document never leaves the browser, and the original file is left untouched.
How to use PDF Metadata Editor
- Drop a PDF onto the dropzone; the existing title, author, subject, keywords and creator appear in the fields.
- Edit any field. Keywords are entered as a comma-separated list.
- Click Save PDF.
- The tool writes your values, sets the producer to ToolKit and refreshes the modification date.
- Download the -meta.pdf copy and check the values in your PDF reader.
Features
- Reads and writes the five common document-information fields: title, author, subject, keywords and creator.
- Keywords are typed as a comma-separated list and stored as individual entries.
- Producer is set to ToolKit and the modification date is updated automatically on save.
- Fields left empty are saved empty — a quick way to remove an unwanted author name.
- Local processing with pdf-lib; nothing is uploaded.
- The result downloads with a -meta suffix, so the original stays on disk exactly as it was.
Tips and common mistakes
- Clear the author and creator fields before publishing anything you drafted privately.
- Use the subject or keywords fields to add searchable context for document-management systems.
- Check the title field first when a document came from a template — old titles are the most common leftover.
Frequently asked questions
Which fields can I edit?
Title, author, subject, keywords and creator. The producer field is set to ToolKit when saving and the modification date is refreshed automatically; neither of those is editable in the interface.
How do I remove metadata rather than edit it?
Clear the fields you want gone and save — empty values replace the old ones. For a wider sweep in one step, PDF Compress can clear all of these fields while re-saving the file.
Why should I check metadata before sharing a document?
The author and creator fields often name a person and the software they used, and stale titles or subjects from templates can reveal more than intended. Reviewing the fields takes seconds and avoids sharing information you did not choose to disclose.
Will every reader show my changes?
The values are written into the PDF's document information, which mainstream readers display. Some readers also show the file name itself, which this tool does not change.
Does saving break digital signatures?
Yes — writing the file changes its bytes and invalidates existing cryptographic signatures. Edit only documents whose signatures you do not need to keep valid.
Does editing metadata touch the page content?
No. Only the information fields are written; pages, bookmarks and annotations are left exactly as they were.
