PDF to Text
Extract all text from a PDF into a copyable, downloadable text file.
Your files never leave your device. Everything runs in your browser.
What PDF to Text does
PDF to Text extracts the embedded text layer from a PDF and shows it in a box you can copy or download as a .txt file.
It is the quick route from a PDF to something editable: pasting a clause into notes, quoting a report, translating the contents, or simply checking whether a document contains searchable text at all.
Extraction uses pdf.js and walks the document page by page. Text is joined in the order the PDF stores it, which is usually good enough for prose and often imperfect for complex layouts.
How to use PDF to Text
- Drop a PDF onto the dropzone.
- Click Extract text.
- The text of every page appears in the box, with a blank line between pages.
- Use Copy to put it on the clipboard, or Download .txt to save a plain text file.
- Skim headings and columns before relying on the output — the layout is simplified.
Features
- Extracts the text layer of every page with pdf.js.
- Text items are joined with spaces and pages are separated by a blank line.
- Copy to clipboard or download as a .txt file named after the source document.
- Instant way to tell whether a PDF is searchable or just a stack of images.
- Works offline in the browser; nothing is uploaded.
- Clean, readable output for prose-heavy documents.
Tips and common mistakes
- Use Copy and paste straight into your editor; the .txt download is handy when the text needs cleaning first.
- If the box stays empty, the PDF is a scan — reach for an OCR tool rather than retrying.
- Keep the extracted copy for searching, but treat the original PDF as the authoritative version.
- Search the extracted text for the passage you need instead of reading the whole document — that is the real advantage over the layout.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the extracted text empty?
Because the PDF has no text layer. Scanned pages are images, and this tool does not perform OCR — it can only read text the PDF already contains. Run the pages through an OCR tool first if you need text from a scan.
Is the original layout preserved?
No. Columns, tables, headers and footers are reduced to a stream of words. Simple paragraphs survive well; multi-column pages and tables should be reviewed and reordered by hand.
Can it read text inside images or charts?
No. Words baked into a picture are invisible to the extractor, just like a scanned page.
What about password-protected PDFs?
They cannot be opened by the extractor. Unlock the file in your PDF reader, export an unprotected copy, and run that.
Are line breaks preserved?
Only partly. Text items are joined with spaces, so individual line breaks inside a paragraph usually disappear, while pages are separated by a blank line. Where a PDF stores text in small fragments, words can also arrive with extra spaces between them — a pass with a text editor's find-and-replace settles that quickly.
Can I extract just one page?
Extract that page into its own PDF with Split / Extract PDF, then run the single-page file — the box will contain only its text.
